Hike 2 – Olmos Basin trail

January 9, 2019 by simon

I had some free time last Sunday before work at the retail job. I knew there was a park nearby so I decided to visit it and see what was there because I had never visited the park and knew there was a trail that follows the creek through the park.

What I did not expect was that the trail was completely paved for the whole .81 miles of its length. Still, a trail is a trail and I had never walked the length of in this park which is build on a flood plain and is part of the cities preventative measures to keep downtown San Antonio from flooding.

It was a nice stroll through the Oak trees and great for a little short day hike before work. I don’t know that I will revisit this trail, and I was disappointed there were not any paths that would take me off the pavement and onto something a bit more rugged.

Weekly Checkin 1/6/2018

January 7, 2019 by simon

Pokemon Go Steps

This week has been really good. I started the week and the year off right by going on a hike. I also wanted to make certain that I got my 10,000 steps each day. I could do this however I could, which led to a really poor choice, or an excellent example of how out of shape I am.

You see, one day this week the weather was really bad, so I decided to go for a walk in the stairwell downtown. One story up, then 8 stories down then back up 7 stories. It was murder on my calves. And then my iPhone did not record a single step of that. Incredibly cruel.

Because of this. I finally got a replacement for my Apple Watch. I decided to get the Garmin Vivosmart 3. It was on sale on Amazon, and I have some Amazon bucks to spend so I decided to grab one. I like it and that it is keeping track of my walking habits. I can leave my phone behind and just go for a walk.

It is not a permanent solution for me, but it is a nice tracker and I may continue to use it for those times when I do not want to risk my apple watch again.

I did get one solid run in from Couch to 5k, however the stair climbing stunt completely ruined my calves and made it hard to walk the next day. Put that on pause and focused on just walking and stretching.

I did end the week with a nice hike/stroll along a nature trail in Olmos basin which I will write about tomorrow.

1Sec Everyday for 2018

December 31, 2018 by simon

I actually really enjoyed this little project. I started this New Years Eve of last year. I was dog sitting for a friend and scrolling through blogs and I saw people posting about their 1Sec Everyday videos, and was like…I want to make one!

And so I did. I took a lot of videos of my cat. I also shot a large number of vertical videos and a handful of still photos on the days when I forgot to take a video.

This was fun, and something I am going to repeat in 2019.

Goals for 2019

December 29, 2018 by simon

My goals for 2019 are going to be a bit different. My life is being dominated in the early part of the year by the new career academy so that will be the number one priority with everything else being secondary. I really am betting the farm on this. So goal one is of course GRADUATE. Everything else is just extra special.

Goal 1: Get Outside more

I went to the beach a few times in 2018, and went on a lot of long walks and a few runs. For a while I was training for a half marathon, but then I got side tracked. 2019 I want to get back into hiking, and riding my bike and running. I am currently training for a 5k, but then it’ll be to train for a 10k and more.

I also want to get back into kayaking in 2019, and it will be right around the time of me starting a new job, so it will be a perfect stress reliever.

Goal 2: Read a New Book

I had a goal of reading a ton of new books in 2018. I missed that goal. The problem is I end up reading the same books over and over. I love the
Wheel of Time, but I end up reading my favorite books in the series. I have a ton of books that I have picked up that I should read. So now I need to sit down and read it.

Goal 3: PersonalĀ Development

This was pulled from my ToDoist template that I added. Pick up a new daily habit, exercise and get in shape as much as possible. And log my spending and stay on the budget were the items I added to my todolist.

I have been running, but on my off days I am going to be doing the items in the Sworkit app to help me stay on target, and logging my calories with MyFitnessPal.

My new daily habit is to not drinks sodas. Better for my teeth, and my diet. Instead of soda I will get my 10,000 steps.

Goal 4: Document

I am going through a ton of changes in 2019 career and lifestyle wise. I want to document my 2019 as much as possible. In 2018 I recorded a 1 sec video every day for the year. Almost everyday I should say as some of those days I forgot, but I did take a picture.

I am going to continue that in 2019. A picture and a video everyday for 2019.

And blog as much as possible.

What are your goals for 2019?

Recap of 2018

December 28, 2018 by simon

2018 was full of some big changes. I did not hit all of the goals I wanted to hit, but that is alright with me, as there was a big change in focus.

The Biggest change of this year because I decided to leave my job and pursue a new venture for me. I have enrolled in Open Cloud Academy and will be pursuing some certificates for System Administration.

Here are my goals from 2018 and how I did in then.

Big Goal: Save Money

This I achieved. I did not save as much money as I would like, but I did save something. I also paid down some debts which was a side goal to this. It does give me a nice little bump to start 2019 off strong.

To do this, I Ubered. A Lot. I also set up a waterfall savings plan. The first week I transferred a dollar, then 2, all the way up to 52 dollars. Created quite a little savings account.

Big Goal: Get Outside

Keep Exploring
Holding my Keep Exploring flag on top of Enchanted Rock with my friend Amanda.

This was an easy goal to accomplish. I started the year with a hike at Enchanted Rock. I wanted to hike more but I let the year get away from me.

I did however get to start running again and ran along the San Antonio River on numerous occasions. I feel like that counts as part of the get outside plan.

On the few cons I traveled to. I made it a point to walk places. Especially in Pensacola and Biloxi where I got to walk along the coast line.

Small Goal: Blog More

This started strong. Then fell apart. Then I got back into it at the end of the year.

Small Goal: Make Games

I made another game? Is it good? I don’t know. I like it.

I really just enjoyed making it. And am thinking about another.

Small Goal: Learn More

I did learn a ton in 2018. I completed several different Udemy courses and those have helped put me on the path I am on now.

Where I went in 2018

I didn’t travel as much in 2018. But I did go to two brand new to me places. And that was pretty amazing.

  • Enchanted Rock
  • Pensacola
  • New Orleans
  • Austin
  • Dallas
  • Biloxi

I am not doing nearly as much traveling in 2019. I have nothing planned on the horizon outside of a con in Laredo.

I feel an adventure is coming tho.
